New 0204 Range Released: 10 Million New London Telephone Numbers
As London’s population and business demand continue to grow, Ofcom has announced the release of 10 million new London telephone numbers. From 12:00 noon on 1st October, the brand-new 0204 number range will officially launch, expanding capacity for individuals and organisations across the capital.
The decision follows an ongoing rise in demand for London telephone numbers, driven by new businesses, home offices, and digital services that still require landline connectivity. With the existing (020) 3, 7, and 8 ranges almost fully allocated, this expansion comes at a critical time.
How the New 0204 London Telephone Numbers Will Be Allocated
Applications for the new 0204 range will open in October, with allocations beginning in December. Ofcom has confirmed that allocations will be handled on a “first come, first served” basis and evaluated according to their standard criteria.
To qualify, telecoms providers must demonstrate a genuine demand for additional London telephone numbers, especially if they already hold existing 020 allocations. Typically, Ofcom will only issue one block of 020 numbers at a time per applicant.
Importantly, there will be no changes to the existing (020) 3, (020) 7, or (020) 8 numbers, which will continue to function as normal. Ofcom estimates that fewer than one million numbers remain in these existing ranges — and that these could be fully allocated within a year, given that roughly 30,000 numbers are distributed each week.
Why the Demand for London Telephone Numbers Remains Strong
Despite a gradual decline in traditional landline use, UK customers still make around 44 billion minutes of landline calls each year, according to Ofcom. Moreover, most broadband connections still rely on a physical line — and therefore, a telephone number — to operate. This ensures that London telephone numbers remain essential for both home and business connectivity.
