In 2015 BT announced they will switch off  their ISDN and PSTN network by 2025. The plan being to migrate all customers to an IP network as soon as possible.  But what does this mean for your business?

If your business’ phone calls are handled by a (PABX) system, you will be connected to the telephone network using an ISDN line. When BT switch off their ISDN and PSTN network, you will be migrated over to a single IP network. As a result, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) technology which will ultimately replace all legacy network and platforms.

If you can upgrade your phone system to support SIP,  you will only need to find a SIP Trunk provider. However, some telephone systems do not support SIP and these will be rendered useless when BT withdraws ISDN. In this instance, you will need to look at investing in a new premises-based SIP PBX phone system. Or you could take advantage of the opportunity to move to a Cloud base phone system.

The recent investment in the UK communications network with the roll out of super-fast fibre internet and new Ethernet products provide a viable alternative to the old legacy lines. Switching to an IP network using VoIP and SIP technology brings with it many benefits and opens up endless possibilities for your business.

Whichever options you choose, IP telephony is the future of business telecoms. It allows you to cut down on communication costs whilst enjoying a rich communication experience.

Top 5 Benefits of SIP and VoIP

  1. Huge savings – With up to a 78% reduction in costs compared to ISDN due to cheaper calls and no more expensive line rental.
  2. Greater flexibility– Move anywhere in the UK and simply plug back into the network with no need to change numbers.
  3. Faster installation–   No physical lines to install and no engineer waiting times.
  4. Higher resiliency– Multiple fibre lines provide an automatic backup and fail-over.
  5. Advanced features– Increased control, integration and analytics offers a huge range of new and advanced features.
