Due to London’s increasing demand, 10 million extra phone numbers are to be made available. The new 0204 London Number Range is to be released from noon on 1st October. Choice of available blocks will be on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Applications will be considered in line with Ofcom’s usual allocation criteria. This includes, demonstrating justified demand for more London numbers if already holding allocations of 020 numbers. They will generally allocate only one block of (020) numbers at a time.
There is no change to (020) 3, 7 and 8 numbers.
According to Ofcom, there are less than a million numbers left to be allocated under the existing ranges and they expect those to be used up within the space of a year (i.e. they distribute c.30,000 numbers in London each week via the existing (020) 3, 7 and 8 ranges)..
UK customers still spend 44 billion minutes making landline calls every year, Ofcom said. Although usage is declining most home broadband connections rely on a landline which needs a number, it added.
New Numbers will be allocated from December with Ofcom accepting applications for (020)4 numbers from telecoms companies from October.
