5G Technology on dice

For those of you still trying to get your head round how 4G works…Stop! That technology is old news…5G is coming …and in a big way!

What is 5G you ask?

Well, 5G is the brand new, shiny, amazing, super-fast technology that big networks are getting ready to roll out in just a couple of months times. Now the fifth generation of mobile networks. It follows previous mobile generations 2G, 3G and 4G. Compared to today’s networks (which primarily use 4G and 3G technology), 5G is set to be far faster in terms of upload and download speeds and much more reliable, with greater capacity and lower response times. As a result, it will support many more connections than 4G towers and we won’t see a drop in bandwidth as has been the case before.

“5G dramatically changes what consumers can do on their phones and at home,” says Kevin Hasley, head of product at RootMetrics, which collects mobile network performance information. “With 5G we are going to see 4K and 8K streaming video with zero lag, real-time game play everywhere, the self-aware smart home, large and seamless video conference calls and mobile augmented and virtual reality experiences.”

How fast is 5G technology?

Two words…Very Fast! In theory, a 5G connection should be multitudes faster than current connections, with average download speeds of around 1GBps expected to soon be the norm. Users will be able to download a whole HD movie in about 10 seconds. At launch, connections will be around five times faster than the best 4G networks, but eventually it will be possible to reach speeds of up to 100Gb per seconds between ten and 20 times faster than 4G.

When will 5G be available?

After years of promises and false starts, 5G is finally coming to seven cities across the UK from July. Vodafone UK are said to be the first mobile network to launch the technology with a go live date of 3rd July 2019. However, there has already been speculation that network giants, EE, may pip them to the post. Whoever it is, we can look forward to faster speeds and a more reliable network by the end of summer.

Where is 5G being rolled out?

Vodafone is set to be the first network to roll out 5G to the UK. With announcements that it will be available in seven cities at launch; Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London will be among the first cities in the world to receive 5G with Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton will follow later this year.

With a new network comes new capabilities. Broadband-like speeds on your phone, improved downloading and uploading speeds, and for IoT (Internet of Things) the ability for companies to control devices remotely in a much more efficient and faster way than currently possible.

The Advantages of a 5G Network

– Increased Bandwidth for All Users
– Faster Speed
